deleting www host impossible :-(
« on: September 27, 2001, 02:16:06 PM »
hi,

i use e-smith 4.1.2 for dns, ipmasqerading and mailing. to use it as mailserver, ive setup a virtual domain, but our homepage (same domain) is hostet outside, so e-smith should not be the www server, but as this is a host entry, it doesnt forward the dns-request to the external dns server, and resolves itself, resulting in the internal ip address.

ive also entered our domain in IE not to be used by proxy.

the real problem is here:
ive deleted the host "www", it said the host was deleted, and www isnt in the list. BUT if i refresh the host list, www is there, again (!)

how can i get rid of that entry once and for all, please?

any help welcome...
Michael

Feed it the IP address of your web host.

Dan is right. I came across the same problem myself when I first set up my ESSG. Personally, I'd much prefer to be able to delete the WWW entry but since it cannot be done the work around is to set the IP address of your web site to the hostnames settings page.

1. Log on to the net via your normal dial-up / broadband.
2. Ping your website (ie. ping www.yourwebsite.com)
3. Record the IP address you get as a reply
4. Enter that IP address into the hostnames page of the e-smith-manager.

The only set back to this workaround is that you might have to do this again should your ISP decide to move things around internally which results in a new IP address being associated with your web site (it's happened before).

Good luck !

Just a short note:
While SME 5 doesn't fix the deletion problem, it does make the redirection configuration a little easier than 4.2.
