Topic: Network card

Hello,

I am new to SME and to Linux in general but I managed to install it. However, I cannot make the network work because the network driver is not on the list. I have the Linux driver on a cd but I cannot figure out how to install it... I suspect there must be a basic document somewhere but I cannot find it.  Moreover, I cant figure out how to bypass the server console to a normal login...

The hardware is the ASUS Pundit barebone.

Any suggestion greatly appreciated!

What kind of nic is it?

I use an ASUS pundit barebone http://usa.asus.com/products/desktop/pundit/overview.htm  The nic is integrategrated in motherboard.  It is a Broadcom 440X Fast Ethernet. I have the linux driver on the cd, and i read about other people unsing it successfully...

as far as i know, the bcm4400 driver for that device needs at least kernel 2.4.23 while SME runs kernel 2.4.20.
so you have to upgrade the kernel first and compile the driver. But there is no compiler in SME-standard.
there is a how-to which describes how to integrate the compiler into SME.

many things to do, better would be to insert another NIC in the pundit.

You are right RavenIV. Other people say the same regarding the kernel versions http://www.nenie.org/misc/asuspunditlinux.html.

I already put a second card which I use for now. As a little home server it works like a charm (I don't need a gateway, one card is ok).  True, many things need to be done to make it work. I will do this as a learning experience in my free time. Again, thanks a lot.

if you need more than one PCI-card, you can insert a raiser-card.
with that you have two or more PCI-slots.

get the raiser-card at asus or at ebay.
