Reinstalling sme server 6.01 after changin new hardware??
« on: December 08, 2004, 06:31:46 PM »
Hi,

I just got new hardware: prosessor(p3 733mhz),new motherboard, new memory, new cd-rom etc.
Except i will keep my old hard-drive/hard-disk.

So the question is can i just put my old hard-disk from my old computer to my new computer without reinstalling it?
Or is there a way to keep my old programs and configurations and somehow reinstalling the sme server?

Because it will be days a work to configure all things again :(.

.. this is mostly a 'suck it and see' proposition, that said it usually works well especially if the new hardware is a reasonalbel match for the old (ie Intel mobo is replaced with newer Intel mobo).

If you move from an Athon system to an Intel system the AMD kernel can sometimes give you grief when fired up on an Intel system.

I have donw this (recently too) but make a point of trying to keep as much of the hardware the same or close to minimise my aggravation factor.

If the system fires up just rerun the setup process from the text admin screen and let it run through its reconfiguration process.

My old system was p2 300mhz or 330mhz and now im moving to p3 733mhz. I think the old motherboard had sdram too on it. So the following things will be new: motherboard, memory, processors, power supply, network card and graphic card.

So can i put the sme server install cd in the drive and click on upgrade, so that i can keep my old system (configurations, programs etc.) in it?
I mean if i upgrade (6.01->6.01) will it keep my old configurations, program etc. ?

Or did you mean, that i use the admin screens/server console "configure this server" button?

.. the most important thing to get close (if poss) is the mobo chipset!  If your old system had the Intel BX (Slot 1) chipset and your new one uses an 810 or 815 Intel chipset then you should not encounter any difficulties.  If the newer board uses a VIA chipset it should still work ok but may take a coupla reboots and the odd /sbin/e-smith/signal-event post-upgrade to sort itself out.

Video card, psu, memory type don't really matter.

Your still on an Intel chip so the kernel is the same as before.

NIC's can be changed and just reconfigured as per my last post.
