Migration to another server
« on: December 18, 2004, 01:45:50 AM »
I have recently been put in charge of a migration project from one server to another. I was directed to this site to look up information on it.  We are currently using the server as a Domain Controller only, it is running this version:

Quote
Mitel Networks SME Server 5.6
Copyright 2002 Mitel Networks Corporation.
All rights reserved.

I am unfamiliar with this project and was wondering how difficult it would be to do this. I have located all the profiles and user settings.
Quote
Profiles are in:
/home/e-smith/files/samba/profiles

Users are in:
/home/e-smith/files/users

Besides copying over these two directories, what other config files need to be copies over?  I'm assuming that I'm gonna need /etc/smb.conf

What other things should I look out for when migrating the settings to a new install of SME?

Why not do a backup-to-desktop, then restore-from-desktop.

Not sure how well this will work if you install 6.0.1-01 on the new box though.

If you would prefer to do it manually, don't forget:

/etc/e-smith/templates
/etc/e-smith/templates-custom

and check /etc in case you have any programs installed which you havn't been using the template system for (ie, me with asterisk).

Goodluck.

Do a search for the lazy administration tools.  Use to backup the users, ibay, groups etc.  restore it on the new server and copy the ibays.  Passwords are lost by this method.  The install is  a clean start

I looked at the backup option from the server-manager, and it claims to only need 5gb for the backup, but I ssh'd into the box and noticed that the profiles take up about 20gb.  Does the backup tool use compression? or is it only backing up certain things?
