newb - new to linux and SME
« on: December 27, 2004, 11:51:14 PM »
I looked thoroughly through the forums, but could not find the anser(s) I was looking for.

I am replacing two Fedora Core 2 installs with SME. I recently (2 months ago) went to a workshop, down and dirty, on how to install/set-up SME.

Needless to say, after a while, either I have forgotten how, or was not given all of the set up info.

My school servers sit on a cable modem (Comcast). I am replacing the FC2/SonicWall combo with the SME server/gateway configuration.

I am a little puzzled as to what numbers I should have pulled and placed in what spots.

My old configuration data, from Comcast using a SonicWall was:

WAN Gateway (Router - in this case the SonicWall) 24.131.156.1
WAN IP (NAT Public) 24.131.156.141
Subnet Mask 255.255.252.0

Settings on SME Server
Primary Domain Name: cwes.weare.k12.nh.us
System Name: cwes
Local Network adapters: This Dell server has the same adapters for eth0 and eth1, which it finds no problem
Local IP Address 192.168.1.1 (this differs from install default because I have some static network printers)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Operation Mode: Server & Gateway
External Access Mode: Dedicated
External Network adapters: This Dell server has the same adapters for eth0 and eth1, which it finds no problem
Ethernet Card Assignment: normal
External Interface Configuration: This is where I run into issues. I have tried DHCP (acct-name, eth-address) and static, all to no avail. Currently I have it set to static with external IP 24.131.156.141, Subnet 255.255.252.0 and gateway 24.156.131.1. These numbers differ from what my laptop gets if I hook it directly to the cable modem.

I have entered the domain as cwes.weare.k12.nh.us, and the given the server name "cwes". When I login, it says cwes.cwes.weare.k12.nh. I am assuming that cwes is a conanical of weare.k12.nh.us which is part of my problem.

Okay, hopefully that is enough information to help you help me get on the right track. Thanks in advance to any/all for any help.

An Update
« Reply #1 on: December 28, 2004, 12:31:25 AM »
I was finally able to get my laptop to ping to an external address. I thought that was a good point to leave for the day.

However, it seems the website is not visible from outside the network. Any suggestions?
