I am not sure if this is an SME problem or not.
I have a VPN and can ping/access shares from workstations on both sides but now I cannot ping hostnames of workstations (or the hostnames of the SME 5.6 servers) on either side and nothing shows up in network neighborhood outside each side.
Three things happened. I had to redo the ipsec configurations, I put up a Win 2003 testing server (not set as a WINS server) and added an XP workstation.
The ipsec "server" side is set as the WINS server on the "client" SME side box.
I would be very grateful for any troubleshooting steps!
