Software upgrade vs/ re-install
« on: February 16, 2005, 01:41:19 AM »
I've been using e-smith, errr, SME server for several years now.  Prior to release 5 there was a menu item for upgrading the software. After attempting to upgrade 5.5 several times and getting failures, I finally just started over with version 6.

I noticed that there is not longer an upgrade menu item.

Looking in these forums, I see:

"<AdministrationFAQ> Which updates do I need to apply to SME?
SME should be updated regularly from the  <http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/smeserver/updates/6.0.1/RPMS/> updates <http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/smeserver/updates/6.0.1/RPMS/> directory. It is important to install all the updates supported by Contribs.org: the reliability and the safety of your server can depend on it.

NB: At this time, an automatic update policy is not yet defined. As this policy evolves, this FAQ will be updated to reflect it."

When I go to the supplied link, I get:

"404 FILE NOT FOUND
AuĂȘ! (oops!) The page you are looking for is no longer on ibiblio.org </> or has been moved."

So, two questions.

1- what happened to the menu item and is there a replacement?
2- Where do I get updates and how are they installed?

Yes, I looked through the FAQ and documentation, but I'm sure I missed this topic.  I've run SME since about release 3.0 and think it's a great system!!

Hello,
thats not exactly accurate,
Thats the only official updates, but
if you are running 6.01 I would recomend getting Jesper's updates. I think that the PHP, SSL, SSH, and apache updates are pretty important.

Be careful with the updates for horde/webmail they will overwrite your exsisting php configuration files.

good luck!

Okay, I get the point(s).  And I agree that update and upgrade are different.  My original subject line, in fact, should have been update vs/ upgrade.

I wasn't able to update my v5.6 so I upgraded to v6.0.1

Does anyone know why the update feature (it used the terminology "applying blades") was removed from the main menu?  What replaces that functionality?
