Hi all. I have a couple of quick (sorry - now read long) questions re E-smith V5 SP2 installed.
Easy stuff first (I think)
When I orginally set the machine up I assigned it an address of 192.168.0.202 and just had it as a machine on the network for file services only. I wanted to see how stable it was before committing it further. I then removed my old gateway machine and gave the E-Smith box the gateway IP of 192.168.0.1
When I go into the manager to review the settings I see the following :
Local IP address / subnet mask 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0
External IP address / subnet mask 217.32.135.247/255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.0.202
Any idea why the gateway still shows as 202 ?
The local IP is correct and the external is presumably assigned from the dialup provider and is therefore correct, so why is the gateway still shown as it's old IP. Shouldn't it be the same as it's local IP adress ?
Long question now....
Re DNS / DHCP, could someone spellout in the simplest terms the easiest setup for the server and windozwe 95/98 clients. I have read till my eyes are crossed and still it drives me nuts.
My main question is around the DNS page in network settings. What is the difference between enabling and disabling DNS on a Windoze box ? I guess is you disable it, the box tries to use netbios for name resolution. How does that work with E-Smith ?
I have DNS enabled on each client. Each WS has a host name and domain of localnet. The server is server.localnet
Presumably then, the 'FQDN' of any machine is host.localnet as far as DNS is concerned. If I ping host I get a reply, but if I ping host.domain (i.e. FQDN) I get nothing.
e.g.
ping user reply....
ping user.localnet not a thing......
This then impacts on the mail settings if I try to forward from say the admin mail box to a.user I get
:
Sorry, I couldn't find any host named localnet.localnet. (#5.1.2)
--- Below this line is a copy of the message.
Return-Path:
Received: (qmail 11827 invoked by uid 100); 4 Oct 2001 22:02:49 -0000
To: a.user@localnet.localnet
Why localnet.localnet ?
Will it make any difference to have static IP's & a host file on each machine ?
From the reading that I have done, I realise that there are various issues at play here. However, there must me an easier way..............
I am currently lumbered with running 3 separate small networks (don't ask - it's a long boring story !), and have had similar fun elsewhere. I'd just like to understand, and get it right ! I must say that E-smith has been the easiest to install, but the hardest to get right, especially in the mail department.
Sorry if this is all a bit muddled. It's a reflection on my current state of mind
Any help gratefully appreciated.
John
