Changing domain controllers. Any tricks?
« on: January 27, 2005, 12:16:54 AM »
I would like to change my SME Server from one box to another.  I would keep the same configuration, network name, etc.  I use it as a domain controller for several XP boxes.  After switching the SME Server, and setting up the same users on it, will XP identify the same username on the new server that it did with the old one?

Thanks.

In theory if you backup your current install,
then do a fresh install on the new box.

You should be able to restore your backup to the new box
with little to no problems at all!

You may need to reinstall any rpm's you have added (on your old box, ie; phpmyadmin, awstats etc.....) on to the new box, but that should be about it!

Another thing to watch for is that you give the new box the same name as the old box, and the nic(s) are all configured the same!

In essence just replicate your current install settings.
Check out in the server-manager panel "Review Configuration" replicate this in your new install!

This is probably not the only way or the easiest way to do it, but it has worked for me many times!

My 2 cents worth!

Thanks for reassuring me.  I just made the switch and everything looks like it is working.
