Topic: MRTG tweaking question

Hi,

I've been using MRTG addon by Jesper (http://sme.swerts-knudsen.dk/index.html?frame=http%3A//sme.swerts-knudsen.dk/howtos/howto_30.htm) for a while now. There is no easier install around and it works perfectly.

That is .... a few things I want to change but have no idea how or even where to begin.

1. WAN interface only shows up to 200KB/s for incoming traffic. I have a 8Mbit/s connection that peaks around 850KB/s (in theory it could go up as high as 1024 KB/s). I want to change it so it displays the full range.

2. I have 12 PCs using the server as gateway and want to have a graph showing the usage up and downstream for each of the 12 pc's. Has anyone done this or knows how please do tell.

3. If possible I would also like to be able to distinguish between protocols being used but I think this would be more a thing for NetProbe to deal with. The MRTG page can now be accessed by all local users but Protocol usage I think is something I think only the administrator should be able to see.

Any help tweaking MRTG would be very much apreciated.

PS I do not have any manageble switches in this network so snmp on thes wil not work.

1. mrtg does scale. If the full bw is reached, it will display it. Otherwiese it will fall back to a more "readable" format.

2. A quick search brought up this module for mrtg http://www.snert.com/Software/mod_watch/ but i've read that it requires compiling apache and that is beyond my knowlegde at this time.

3. The module should go in an ibay with admin-only access.

Thank you for your reply. Your answer one .... well no. It maxes out at 248Kb/s at 99,4% of what it says is my bandwidth. My bandwidth is about 3 times that. It does in practice reach this speed. For instance if I download a new iso it definately reaches this for serveral intervals of 5 minutes each.

Your answer two. I will take a look but compiling anything is beyond my ability. So this may take a while to figure out. Its a start so thank you for pointing me in the right direction.

Your answer three I want to be able to give local users access to view MRTG so they can tell if their neighbour is hogging bandwidth. I don't want to keep playing policeman all the time and having people complain about them not having a good connection if someone is clearly the cause of internet slowdown.

Ah hi Mads,

Thanks for the information. I will take a look and see if I can fix the bandwidth problem. Seems easy enough.

I will also take a look at the rrdtool option. I used to use it a few years ago but never delved into all possible uses. Just used it for the exact same thing MRTG contrib offers.

Update:

Fixed the scaling problem per Mads's suggestion. It took a while before I saw the new output.

As for the other two issues, still looking for a solution. The thing is I do not have access to the client PC's so I can not install any programs reporting on traffic to a rrdtool.

What I am currently looking for is a open source variant of netprobe. Any suggestions?
