Carl,

This is a subject that has been addressed many, many times before.  A search on SATA will provide you with a lot of info.

Please attempt to search the forums for this information before posting.

Quick SATA answer - no.  But there are a number of 3rd party cards that SME Server will recognize that will run SATA drives or RAIDs.

The 6.5 beta version support SATA.

I currently have several SATA only servers running this dist.

I have posted the hardware elsewhere in the 6.5 announcement and one about custom ISO.

It is a supermicro P4SCE board in a 5013C-T 1RU chassis.
http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/P4/E7210/P4SCE.cfm

Running with a P4 3.2Ghz, 2xWD 200GB SATA and 2GB ram.

From the supermicro website:
Dual IntelĀ® 82541 Gigabit Ethernet Controllers
SATA Controller on-chip (IntelĀ® ICH5R)

Network card: You need to manually select the Intel 1GB network card (I use the last one on the list with no problems).

I just posted elsewhere that I am now using 6.5b2 on several production machines as I need SATA only support (on the above equipment).

gocdo,
You're a brave man!
Can you tells exactly how did you go about to make SATA be recognized on boot?
On the other posts you're running the custom iso, in which version RC2 or RC3?
What do you have on the production machines, 6.5 or custom?
I'm very interested in make use of a Intel Mobo with SATA I have, but the piece of making the SATA work has been a problem.
Thanks,

gocdo

Hi

>gocdo,
>You're a brave man!

Not really - just need SATA support. Shame support has taken so long.

>Can you tells exactly how did you go about to make >SATA be recognized on boot?

Put 6.5 iso CD in drive, boot, install, reboot, config, etc - thats all there was too it.

>On the other posts you're running the custom iso, in >which version RC2 or RC3?

I tried that but had problems with the SATA performance, not using it now. 6.5 is fine for me.

>What do you have on the production machines, 6.5 or >custom?

6.5. Only one contrib from dungog, vdomain. Will install a few more when Stephen has them updated.

>I'm very interested in make use of a Intel Mobo with >SATA I have, but the piece of making the SATA work >has been a problem.

Not sure about other mainboards, the one I am using is working just fine for me.

How about the hostraid, did you install a software to manage raid or left SME managing them?
What are the settings in the Bios? What I found from reading many threads is that SATA is actually managed by the BIOS, and I was advised to turn the management off in order for SME to find them.
Unfortunatelly none of this worked for me.
Thanks,

Hi,

My install is SME6.5 dual disk raid (raid 1).

I have just booted back into the bios to check settings. It is a default install with SATA=IDE (could mean emulation mode) and onchip serial ata mode = conmbined (allows a mix of SATA/PATA) so the cdrom can be seen (could mean SATA mode). I never tried the SATA = Raid mode and I am not a fan of the on mainboard raid chips. Once installed I can set the mode to sata master 0 (which seems to be native Sata) and it boots/runs fine. I tried sata=raid and it kernel panic'ed. combined and  sata only are ok.

I could be mistaken and it is running in IDE emulation mode (sata=IDE). I have just had a decent goggle and based on what I read I am not sure if the bios is running native SATA or emulated.

Anyone have any ideas how to tell if it is IDE emulated or native?

The fact is that the only HDDs in the server are SATA and SME is installed and running.

regards
kevin

Thank you for the reply Kevin, this may lead to my solution!
I'm trying to make it run on a Intel S875WP1-E Mobo, and on the Bios I have a setting for turning SATA on = Enhanced mode, or off = classic.
I agree with you on the Raid management, I rather have SME manage it.
Whenever I tried this http://no.longer.valid/phpwiki/index.php/Compaq%20Proliant%20DL%20380%20G4%20Installation I would also get a Kernel panic on reboot.

Thanks,
