Is it possible to change the default name for the sme mail server from mail.mydomain.com to something else, e.g mail2.mydomain.com?

you can add a new hostname in the server panel "Hostnames and addresses".  

Any request pointed at port 25 with find its way to the mail server.

     Thanks for the prompt response, but the problem I am having is that the users have changed their hosting company, which has set up a mail server with pop3 access with the same name as their existing internal imap server eg mail.acme.net, thus making it impossible to retreive mail from the new external server. I was hoping to change the local from mail.acne.com to somethingelse.acne.com so we could access the new server with multidrop/pop3.

you need to login with the "admin" (not "root")through ssh or console (not server-manager) and go through the "configure this server".

I don't think the text configure will help to change mail.yourdomain.com to mail2.yourdomain.com.  

You need to allocate a non local Ip address to the mail.yourdomain.com, which you do using the "hostnames and addresses" server panel.  

You must find the Ip address of the ISP pop mailbox first by pinging it from a connection which does not go through the SMEserver concerned (although it can go through another one), or perhaps use a dial up account from a laptop?

Thanks for help, looked at Hostnames and Addresses in the server manager as you indicated. So on a test server we created a new name "mail2.mydomain.com" with same parameters as "mail.mydomain.com" Then proceeded to modify mail.mydomain.com as remote server giving it the ip address of the external mailserver and all appears to work fine. I have to leave it now but wiil test it further on my return.
We already had the web site configured this way, with "www.mydomain.com" set as remote with the ip address of external website and "mydomain.com" pointing to the local intranet, don't why I didn't think of doing the same with the mail server, however it does mean changing all the email clients.

I tend to put the "netbios" name in the mail clients- not the FQDN, so wouldn;t have had the problem of changing them.

Thanks Brian for the tip on the netbios name works great.
I found an easier way to resolve the name problem: the server manager allows you to enter the ip address of the external mail server in the email section ->Etrn-multi-drop settings -> Secondary mail server.
so you don't have to use the name, so should be ok as long as hosting company doesn't change the IP address.
All appears to work fine, just still to busy to test it thoroughly though, will have to leave it for the weekend.
