EIDE - any problems with SME6.0 and enhanced IDE?
« on: February 14, 2005, 08:08:57 PM »
I sent the SATA machine back and exchanged for one with two 80 gb EIDE - optiplex 170 -
I hope there is no problem with EIDE or the 533 front side bus P4 boards and running SME 6.0x -
My last setups with SME 6 and P2 450s went smoothe except the older hd being in there starting to wine.
Fedora doesn't have a kernel available that will support SATA either yet apparently.

I never had a problem with either.
Right now my production server runs SME 6.0.1-01 (upgraded from 6.0) on a 1.6 P4 with two Western Digital 80Gb disks in a standard SME software Raid1.
My testserver is running SME 6.5b2 on a 2.4-P4(533), again with WD disks in a similar configuration. Tomorrow I hope to have two new SATA disks replacing defunct (and returned) disks.
If all goes well, I'll be up and running on a new production server (6.5b2) by the end of the week!

SATA did work for you - ?

You must have had ide simulation built into the bios on the system you got SATA to work on.?
I tried it with 6.5b2 and no drives are found.
This dell PowerEdge SC420 doesn't have the option in bios to emulate/simulate IDE for the SATA drive(s).
I thought only 2.4.27 and up kernels work with SATA.

No, I never said that I had S-ATA running.
I tried, but both drives were defunct.
I have replacements coming in today, så perhaps tonight . . if I can spare the time for a fresh install.
To the best of my knowledge, S-ATA runs smoothly on 6.5, but I'll get back to you on that one.

Well, now is perhaps the time to say that I actually have SME6.5b2 running on S-ATA.
Install went a treat - but, mind you - first I had to make the mobo lie to the installation, representing the drives as legacy IDE instead of S-ATA (ie. compatibility mode).
The actual installation on two 120Gb disks (RAID1) took all of 6 and a half minutes.
Right now I'm having a go at the update scripts.
Step 3 is running and to my best knowledge nothing is broken as of yet.
The exciting part will be step 4 !!
. . . so, richW - 6.5b2 does run on S-ATA, so far without a glitch !
To forego the obvious question, the mobo is an Asus P4P800-MX, running a 2.4/533 P4, with 1Gig PC2700-RAM (since my Abit IT7-Max2 couldn't cut the custard).
I've put the two drives in Cremax cooler-boxes, just to be on the safe side.
