Cannot connect to the Internet
« on: February 15, 2005, 09:25:34 PM »
I have installed SME Server 6.0.1-01 and this is working ok. Now I want to connect to the internet but this is not working. When I use ifconfig I see that the NIC has the right IP. I can also ping my ADSL modem(Speedtouch 570i) but when I use ping www.contribs.org I get the message ping: unknown host www.contribs.org.
What is going wrong?

I'm new to linux.
So I do not know yet how to sent the output of ifconfig to a file on a floppy, so I can show the contents here.

I can tell you the following:

My Speedtouch uses IP 10.0.0.138

I have 2 NIC's installed on the SME server

NIC 1(eth0) is used for the local lan and has inet adress 192.168.1.1/Mask 255.255.255.0/Bcast 192.168.1.255

NIC 2(eth1) is used for the internet, but has no inet adress/Mask/Bcast filled in.

Is this enough info for you to help me solve my problem?

Did you set your server up as server only or server/gateway?

In your case I would set it up as server/gateway and set eth1 (2nd) NIC to 10.0.0.100. Leave the rest as it is.

This is not Linux related, but network related.

My server is setup as server/gateway.

How do I set eth1 (2nd) NIC to 10.0.0.100.

Using ifconfig?

Nope, access CONSOLE manager and choose 'reconfigure this server' option. Read through the screens carefully.

On the console enter: /sbin/e-smith/console to get there.

Get to the chat area, I will be around for the next half hour or so.

the first time i use a dsl modem with e-smith i haven't any problem, but the company change the dsl modem with a kind of wirless router built in, so the e-smith box can get the internet because it was imposible setup the modem in bridge mode, so i let the eth0 (the outband NIC) setup as dhcp client & leave the router give the ip to the e-smmit box. The most of the times you can get out but the problem is the conflict with the dns resolver on the built in router function!

My experience has been that if all else is working, then the problem is with the DNS service.  In the "Select Master DNS server address" screen it asks if for a DNS server address and then states: "In most cases you can leave this blank". In my experience leaving this blank on a gateway is a bad idea.

What I did was to find out what the DNS server ip addresses where that my isp provides and to type one of them in the  "Select Master DNS server address" box.  this solved my connection problems and I was then able to complete the internet connection test succesfuly. ;-)
