URGENT!! Please help to setup 2x SME servers to ...
« on: March 06, 2005, 10:09:01 PM »
I need help and advice on setting-up 2x SME servers to send e-mail to each other.

Herewith the requirement:

Server 1 makes dailup connection to Server 2 (analogue/ISDN). Once the connection is made, Server 1 needs to send mail to Server 2. (Point-To-Point Connection)

Server 1 must be able to contact vatious other remote SME Servers. I do not want to use a public network, e.g.: Internet.

Is this do-able???

Tino,

Please do not cross post. It appears that, reading your question, that you did not yet fully explored the forums or the manual. Please try to do so, it will give you a lot of information.

Dear RequestedDeletion,

First and foremost, I considered changing the subject header to make more sense iro the type of information I am looking for, the reason for double post. I do apologize for any future confusion the double post might have on fellow contributers.

Secondly, I do not find the information I am looking for within the forums nor in any other location on this site.

Tino,

the default server manager has an option for a 'delegate mailserver', maybe that is an option for server 1.
I also saw many posts about SME Server forwarding mail to an exchange server, groupwise server or any other server. Maybe the search result will expand using more 'keywords'.

There is a dialin rpm for the e-smith server to accept incoming pstn calls, I used many years ago on version 5.1  I can't remember what it was called. Like RequestedDeletion suggests, maybe a search wll reveal it's location. Server1's outgoing number needs to be set to Server2's number. Sorry about the vagueness but everyone uses dsl these days why not set up VPN connections between networks it's every bit as secure as direct connections.

REGARDS,

Jack.

Hi hf and jackl,

thanks for your input I realy do appreciate it. Once again please accept my appology for posting the same request for assistance twice in each forum.

... now to add more information to the puzzle.

The application is required within a semi military and private sector project. The problem currently is that when private encrypted messages are sent over the normal public internet infrastructure, these files are corrupted by our government due to the fact that it is privately encrypted.

The requirement now is to use private dialup connections to systems and then exchange email across that private connection.

I have though about how to get it to work and maybe came up with a solution where lets say:

1. Main Server - accepting various remote dialup connections from different remote servers.

Once a connection is made and authentication has taken place, the Main server should exchange email with the currently connected remote SME box

This should occur every time a SME box connect to the Main server. Remeber that you could have up to 15+ remote server - not always trying to connect at the same time though - to exchange data over the private line.

The connection medium would most probably be ISDN.

I hope that I've shed more light on the subject to indicate why I initially said that I could not find relevant information for what I was looking for.

Tino Fourie

This is quite a task to setup may not be easy to implement. See the following link regarding a server-manager dialin rpm:
 http://no.longer.valid/phpwiki/index.php/Dialin%20access%20to%20the%20server

I can't remember how many dialin accounts it allows, certainly to cater for 15 servers you would need to add some xtra i/o boards see:
http://www.sunix.com.tw/ipc/sunix_en/class_a.php?class_a_id=2
These boards work ok with SME
You will need external modems to attach to the ports and telephone lines.

You can check the new serial ports are installed by typing lspci -v, this should show the pci card and thr details of the ports as well as all other attatched pci cards. The remote servers would need to be configured as dialup rather than dedicated and this can only be achieved by running the admin console from the command line on each.
The multidrop feaure could be used to log on to the dialin server to access a pop3 account dedicated to each remote server.
This is only a brief outline of what maybe needed, it may help point you in the right direction, also there may be more efficient approaches to solve this problem.

Jack

Hi Jack,

You are correct in being concerned regarding multiple remote dailup connections to a single server, but for now I need to concentrate on the system itself.

It is important to somehow get remote SME boxes to authenticate on the main SME box, get the Qmail servers to exchange message (as you would find with ISP mail spooling) that is only ment for the currently connected box.

I am not too concerned about the amount of concurrent connections to the central machine at this point in time. It has not been identified as an immediate need. Needless to say that I do expect to have to come up with a solution to facilitate that need in future.

Do you think that it could be done:
1. Remote system dailup to central machine
2. Authenticate the remote SME server
3. Only exchange messages ment for recipients on the
   currently connected remote SME machine

Tino
