Help! I can connect to VPN But cannot browse the Network!
« on: March 02, 2005, 12:43:51 PM »
Hello everybody.
I have a hybrid Linux/Windows Network with a SuSe 9.2 Pro Server that acts as Domain controller (PDC) and a bunch of windows clients that are joined to this domain. I then added a SME SERVER 6.0.1 box in order to do mail/VPN. I just put it in the same workgroup name as the other computer and i set it so that it is not a pdc (since suse is already doing it). Well, everything works fine except that when I connect remotely to the PPTP VPN it connects and ping everything but can't browse the network nor open shares except for those on the SME box itself.
Why? Maybe should I join in someway the box to the domain? or is there something else i should do? if it comes to join it to the domain, how do i do it?
Thanks in advance for your replies.

This is just a guess.. I haven't messed with the VPN features of SME yet.. But I would try adding the SME box to your exisiting Windows Domain.. Here is a link to a howto that may help you with that.

Adding SME to domain will not do anything for the name resolution.
Instead try to add SUSE PDC box (and file servers that you may have) to SME's hostnames and addresses list and specify correct WINS server address for VPN configuration on the client computer. That can be your SUSE server. Usually it the same server that provides DHCP or domain controller.
To verify that your problem is not firewalling rules on SME, try to connect to shares by IP in form: \\192.168.1.10\share (use IP address of the server)

Thanks Boris.. I missed that bit with the name resolution.. I assumed that he was pining by host name and not just by IP,.

Ok. Things are working now. i just delegated domain control, dhcp and dns to sme and installed and configured the adv workgroup thingy and it works a charm... :)
Thanks again
