Topic: Using a Router with e-smith

I have just got hold of a Netgear ADSL router, firewall and switch all in one and just wanted to check the best way to use it with my e-smith server version 6.  

I am using my server as an email and web server using a LAN modem, but I have always had problems when the ADSL connection goes down.  Reconnecting has always meant unpluging LAN modem back into a PC with the same MAC address as the NIC in my server reconnecting the modem and then pluging it back into the server, which is a right pain!  

So I was thinking that using a router might help with this problem.  I am not sure of the best way to get the router working with my server.  I thought  to connect the router vai my existing network switch, so that it can be accessed by all the pc's on my network, and also plug it straight into the second NIC on my e-smith server. I haven't tried this yet because it will be on my production server.  Could any let me know if this would work or is there a better way of doing things.  Any feedback would be very helpful.

Since the router will be the firewall as well.
Reconfigure the server to "server only".
Hook up the router to your existing switch.
That should do it.

What model Netgear?

It might have a DMZ option and you would want to
connect SME via DMZ in server-gateway mode.

You other options are to use a Statefull Firewall
ie Smoothwall or IPCop and again use the DMZ network.

If its a Netgear 834 or similar (i.e. LAN/DSL router with or without Wireless), switch on the DMZ and configure the router with the WAN address of the Server as the DMZ port and off you go.

You could also do it the hard way and configure ports for mail, web etc, but I've found SME able to protect itself for the last 2 years without a cough using the DMZ setting on the router.

I have my netgear in modem only mode ... works fine ... couldn't be bothered playing arround in DMZ and other configs. SME handles the login etc for ADSL as well as firewall etc.
