VPN Question Please
« on: March 20, 2005, 01:47:12 AM »
Hi All,

I have a setup as follows:

Windows 2000 server on local network IP 10.0.0.x
SME server as internet gateway and firewall IPs 10.0.0.x and 192.168.10.x.

SME is in turn connected to a Netgear FVS318 VPN router.  I Have 2 remote sites that need to connect to the Windows 2000 server.  all sites have netears fvs318s which are capable  of router to router VPN.

Can I achieve this?  Also some users need to have remote access to outlook web access. Could someone please enlighten me?

THanks and regards

GB

Not clear from your post ...

... Is the Windows 2000 server *behind* the SME Server, or in the same subnet?  That is, does the link to the outside go through both the Netgear and the SME Server before getting to the 2000 server?

If the routers can do full-time IPSec or equivalent VPNs I'd start from there.  Does the Netgear offer enough firewalling capability for your needs?

Hi
thanks for the reply.  The win2000 server is behind the SME.  I don't think I will have a problem with the Netgears, but I am having trouble with the remote users who want to view their emails through OWA.

Remotely, yes, I have have to go thru the SME to get to the Win2k server.

Thanks again for the reply

Simplify: take the SME server out of the picture

Why add another layer of complexity when the Netgear units can provide your NAT and VPN?  I don't think they can do PPtP VPN but you can get an IPSec client for road warriors, and a bit of port forwarding should get you OWA over the VPN.
