Is it possible to do this and to get better security than if I went:

cable modem

wifi Router
I
wifi network

I have an SME 6 server (server only mode) behind a router and then a wifi switch, i.e.

ADSL
|
Router
|
SME
|
Wifi Switch

It works fine for me, no issues whatsoever.  I can't comment though on the security of SME over a hardware router.
