Printers in Windows XP
« on: October 19, 2001, 07:29:21 PM »
Sorry about the post to the wrong list.

My xp box can see the printers on the e-smith box but can't seem to spool to it.

The drivers are in place on the client and the port is detected.

Any ideas?

TIA

What printers do you use? How connected? Please give us some more info...or maybe the words acits and axis do help you :)

I have 2 HP printers. A laserjet 1100 and an Inkjet 932c.
Both of these are connected through the e-smtih box via parellel ports. They work with the win 98se boxes and a SuSe 7.0 box, but not the wife's new win XP box.

Do you need more info?

Thanks.

Well, I think I can't give you a solution...I have an HP deskjet 710c myself...also connected to the parallel port on the sme server and it works fine from win98 and xp clients...I use the Axis print monitor as lpr driver....I thought you should try this but when you say they work via the win98 clients I think your problem isn't solved by this...so I don't know what to do here...

Henry,

It might help if you posted the error message you are getting from the XP box. Is it an authorization / permission failure ? Have you verified that the username you used to log into the XP box exists on the SME server and that the password is identical ?

Post more info for more help :)

No error message, just no print job.

I checked the log in name and password, the same.

I can do file transfers and saves to the folders on the server, but no print.

The printers are on parelle cables, not tcp/ip drops.

How did you configure them?

As I said before I also have an HP deskjet connected via a parallel cable to the e-smith box. I used a non-bidirectional cable (you can also uncheck bidirectional communication) because my 710c doesn't support bidirectional printing in a network. I also used acits lpr driver and axis print monitor and everything worked fine.
Maybe you misconfigured something? It's a guess because I can't image that while you got it working under win98.

there is no problem when i use windows 98se computers and my e-smith, there is no problem when i print from XP to network printers on Win98se boxes.. the only time there is a problem is when i print from xp to printers on e-smith 4.1.2 & 5.0 (updated) "test page fails to print" i have unchecked bidirectional support & tryed difrent spool settings..

Well, after XP irritated me I tried to dump it and load win 98se to have a common OS on the client boxes.
98 didn't like the built in nic or the LCD screen , so I re loaded the cursed XP and lo unto thee, I could install and configure the printers and they worked.

This goes to prove that if you stare at something long enough, it will fix itself.

Thanks for all the advice, help and comments.

Similar problem. I have two XP Professional workstations, one is a fairly basic system, with no local printer. This workstation connects to a shared HP DeskJet 930c on the second workstation, and a HP LaserJet 5P on an external JetDirect, with queue being handled by ESSG 4.1.1 This workstation experiences no problems printing to either printer, or connecting to network shares on the ESSG.

Second workstation is comprehensive system, including USB CD-RW, DVD, Firewire, SB Live, Creative Decoder Card, SiS AGP, P4 1.6 CPU, with the HP DeskJet 930c connected to it via USB, and shared.

I have loaded and reloaded XP numerous times on this workstation, and narrowed down my problems to the installation of the networked printer (HP LaserJet 5P on ESSG). Once configured, I am able to print test page, but next time computer is started, it hangs prior to logon, and no matter how I try, (including system restore) the computer stops responding, and eventually a reload is the only way to resolve.

Has anybody else experienced this sort of problem, or has anybody got a suggestion on why this is happening ?

TIA

I'm having problems similar to the earlier posts in this thread.

I can print fine from my Win2k client to a NEC Superscript 1400 attached to my SME 5.03 server via parallel port using the drivers from the NEC site.

On my new XP Pro box, it won't print at all.  No error messages on my SME server in /var/messages.

When I try to print a test page, I get the following error:
"Test oage failed to print. Would you like to view the print troubleshooter for assistance? Operation could not be completed"

When I try to print a test page from notepade, I get this error:
"the filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect"

I've tried the default XP driver for the printer, and the 2000 driver from the NEC site, both with the same reactions.

The printer does show up fine on the network, and I'm successfully browsing files on the server, writing to the server etc.

I'll keep testing.
