VPN Static IP or Computer Name

I have a windows XP computer that currently VPN's into our Network via pptp.  All is good and pretty stable.  However I need to be able to access the computer either via computer name such as \\name or via a static IP address.  The problem is we have multiple machines vpn'ing in so I cannot guarantee that it gets the same ip every time.  I have installed the dhcp contrib that updates the names, and it works on the LAN machines, but not the vpn machines.  Any guidence would be greatly appreciated

Use your current WINS or dynamic DNS server for name resolution.  On each PPTP client, manually enter either the WINS or DNS server under advanced networking properties of the PPTP connection.

NT/SME (samba) run WINS.  If you are running AD, you have dynamic DNS.  If using DDNS, make sure each PPTP client (2000 & XP only) are set to register with the DNS server.

If your LAN and PPTP clients use the same name resolution server, all should be able to communicate by host name.
