HI folks.
I'm in Australia and I am setting up a new ADSL connection, specifically with Westnet. I've been using SME Server 5.6 now for quite some time to drive a network with a cable connection using DHCP with ethernet address as client identifier.
The problem I am experiencing is I just can't get the ADSL connection going through the E-smith machine. Before I go any further I should note that the entire network is operating normally in that the E-smith machine is delivering DHCP to the network and the entire network is visible. So there are no problems network cards, cables or anything stupid like that.
I've got a Billion 7100G modem/router/wireless which uses a default IP address of 192.168.1.254 and wants to deliver DHCP to the machines plugged into it. I've had absolutely no problems getting a computer to connect plugged into it, thats how I'm connected now, and it always delivers the first IP address at 192.168.1.135 but then delivers the next one at 192.168.1.168. I have a username and password with Westnet. Also, the Billion has a built in firewall utility.
So, I've done my homework on here and as far as I can see it really should be a fairly straight forward enough process. As far as I can tell it should be a matter of using the PPPoE option, dialing in the relevant user details and away it goes. After reading numerous posts here I am under the impression that the SME server should no longer be serving up DHCP to the network if the Billion router wants to, so I should be swtiching that off, and finally I am not sure if I should be setting the option about some other service dishing up DNS or a firewall (or whatever it is) on the network. Regardless, I've tried them all with no outcome at this stage.
The other thing is I am not sure is if I have everything hooked up correctly. Previously I have had a Cable modem going into E-smith machine Eth1 and from Eth0 to a switch. Now I am coming from the phone line into the Billion modem, out of router port 1 and into the E-smith machine Eth1 for the same thing. At no point am I using the uplink for the switch and I am not sure if this is incorrect use of the switch.
Well I think that should be enough information, thanks for the help in advance.
Cheers.
