Topic: really slow ftp server

a have a compaq proliant 800 200mhz 512mb ram running SME 5.1.2.

My problem is with my servers ftp service.
Once an ftp connection is established there is a delay(up to a minute) before the server requests a username/password.

Once logged into the server performance improves but is still unsatisfactory (slow).

has anybody experienced such problems b4?

What's the link speed? ADSL/T1/LAN etc?

i connect on a 10mbps lan but my server is connected to the internet via a 1mbps cable router its slow from the local network and a remote one.
