Win2k and Samba 2.2.2
« on: October 23, 2001, 07:46:47 AM »
Hey, I had previously upgrade from the default samba install on SME 5.0 to Samba 2.2.1a via Dan Brown's How-To.  It went fine, but I couldn't contact the domain whenever I tried, but I could use my server as a workgroup member.  I just finished upgrading to Samba 2.2.2 via Darrell May's How-To and now I am able to reach the step where I am prompted for a username/password when setting up the domain (I still can use Samba as a workgroup member without a problem).  I enter the information, it takes a few seconds but then it comes back with "The specified domain does not exist or could not be contacted" which seems a little funny since it prompts me for the password instead of not being able to see it at all.  I'm sure I'm using the same username/password that I setup samba with.  Also, I have all the correct LAN properties setup.  I checked my registry for the settings that Darrell mentioned but they weren't present at all (possibly one source of problem?).  Any idea why this problem may be presenting itself?  Any suggestions or ideas would be welcome.  And thanks for the how-to's.

Spencer,

Just a quick suggestion - try using your domain name in the pop-up, for example:

'yourdomain\root' (no quotes)

instead of just

'root'

I think I ran into this the other day, and that fixed my issue.

All the standard stuff at the bottom of Darrell's HOW TO apply, so please make sure you have double checked those, ie making sure your workgroup name on the client is not the same as the domain PRIOR to joining.

Good luck, and let me (us) know how it goes...I've been dealing with Samba/Win2k issues for several months, so I know the feeling of frustration.

Patrick

Well I sort of have a catch 22 then.  My computer can't even recognize the linux box if it isn't a member of the same workgroup beforehand.  There by I can't even get to entering the login/password for the domain...but I did try what you suggested and it did the same error.  Do you have any other ideas?  Do you think the registry stuff Darrell mentioned has any effect?  Thanks.

Spencer,

I checked 3 of my Win2k clients and all 3 systems do have the registry entries Darrell's HOW TO mentions.  So that's probably a good place to start - add those registry entries.  Then go back through the HOW TO step by step.

My suggestion about the 'yourdomain\root' was for the following piece of the HOW TO:  "Adding Windows 2000 Clients to the domain"
"...  You will see a window asking for a username and password with permission to add the computer to the domain.  Enter "root" for the username (do not use "admin" or any other username), and use the password you chose above."
Try using 'root', and if that doesn't work try my suggestion.

I would also make sure that you have your Win2k client machine updated to SP2, which is where my systems are...so I know SP2 does work.

Wish I had more concrete help for you, perhaps Darrell and the rest of the gang can be of more help.  But let us know how it goes.

Regards,
Patrick

I'm using SP2 yes.  And I've tried both root and mserver\root.  Could you give me any more information about adding the registry info, I know how to check it and I can see they aren't there, but I'm not sure how to add it especially since everything is listed seperately.

Do you have the same password for root on samba and as your root password on linux or did you have different passwords for both?

 - Give me your email address and I'll send you the registry entries in a file which you can just click on to merge them into your current registry.

- I used the same password.

Sure, thanks, my email is fahrenheit@enragedonline.com.  Thanks, I appreciate it.
And ok, just checking because I used the same password as well.
