SMTP ERROR 553
« on: April 20, 2005, 09:02:09 PM »
Recently it came to my attention when sending mail to our domain using info@ourdomain.com, the sender would receive a message from FETCHMAIL-DAEMON@servername.ourdomain.com stating: invalid address in MAIL FROM (SMTP error 553).
OK the account/mailbox "info" does not exist but the email settings in the server manager are set so that it is forwarded to the admin mailbox and not to return to sender.
At present the "admin" mail box receives the message but the SMTP error message is sent to the original sender. I haven't loaded any new rpm's lately but I must have changed something somewhere for this to happen. Also I'm using the multi-drop function to retrieve mail on SME 6.0.1.
This is not a big probem until a wave of spam  arrives to non valid accounts, causing all the SMTP error messages bouncing to fraudulent mail addresses and into the admin mailbox

Anybody got any ideas on this?

Regards
Jack

Ps we have created an info@ourdomain.com and forwarded the mail to another account and then messages to "info" work fine.

Hi All,

I found the problem, I had installed the domain mail user contrib to check it out and forgot about it. Without configuring it the contrib caused this effect, useful enough on it's own if you use smtp for incoming mail and want to reject email for unknown or invalid accounts.
I uninstalled the contrib did post event and reboot and everything is back to way it was now.

Regards
Jack.
