e-mails take forever to send
« on: May 26, 2005, 03:35:47 AM »
Yes, I searched the forums and nothing answered my question or dealt with my problem.

Running 6.0.1 with updated clam and anti-spam on an amd 900mhz athlon with 512mb ram. Before installing clam and anti-spam, the time between clicking send and the mail being sent was about 3-5 seconds, after the mentioned installs, it's about 30-45 seconds. This is with Eudora, Outlook or sme webmail from a local machine.

Any ideas? I've already turned off the check out going mail and reduced the number of rbl's to 2 in the spam checker.
......
Thanks for your help,
Henry

  So it's not just me then...

I don't pop into here very often anymore as my little server just sits down in the basement and runs, and runs, and runs...  you get the point.  But as of late (last month or two maybe?) I have noticed the exact same thing - although not quite as bad as yours... my outbounds might take 10-15 seconds...  but still.

Disable spam filter in server manager panel and see if any change.
I assume you are using Jespers Spam filter

Jesper's spam filter seems to be causing the delay. I disable the filter and the delay is gone.

It's now a toss up between tons of spam and long send times. Anyone have a fix?

I know you said
"I've .....reduced the number of rbl's to 2 in the spam checker"

Before disabling the RBL's (see below), confirm that the setting is correct by doing
/sbin/e-smith/db configurations show smtpfront-qmail

What do you have listed for the RBLList property

> I disable the filter and the delay is gone.

So turn it back on again and disable ALL RBL lists and see what happens then.

> It's now a toss up between tons of spam and long send times. Anyone have a fix?

Answer the above before tossing in the towel.

When I log in as root and do the /sbin/ thing, I get nothing in return. No RLList property, just a root prompt. Something is not right here, I think.

I did a re-install of Spamfilter and removed all RBL. with no RBL's things were good. Adding the spamhaus RBL was ok, but adding any other RBL in addition to spamhaus was no good.

A typo there, it should read

/sbin/e-smith/db configuration show smtpfront-qmail

There have been anumber of reports about slow email sending when a few RBL lists are enabled, as the local IP is also being checked against the lists.
See

and

for some possible solution

I doubt that there will be any specific fix released for sme 6.x ie updated rpms for example.
sme 7 will have better mail system features that resolve this problem, so when it's ready upgrading will be the way to go.
For now just use a minimal number of RBL lists, (the spamhaus list as a minimum which gets most spam & maybe one or two others & tolerate the 15-30 second or so delay). Consider it the cost of being relatively spam free.

The workaround is outlined in the 2nd post I referred you to (where you use rpms from sme 7) which starts with the following (but please read the whole post so you nderstand the implications)

I was prompted to try the sme 7.0alpha6 rpm
e-smith-mailfront-1.5.2-03.noarch.rpm
on a 6.0 box with Mitel updates to get the later functionality.
Anyone else interested should investigate the feature set (see the changelogs) & thoroughly test to satisfy themselves.

After a bit of sorting out dependencies & versions the following rpms appear to install OK.

rpm -Uvh *.rpm
e-smith-lib-1.15.1-36.noarch.rpm
e-smith-mailfront-1.5.2-03.noarch.rpm
ipsvd-0.11.0-02.i386.rpm
perl-Authen-PAM-0.14-1.0.rh7.dag.i386.rpm
/sbin/e-smith/signal-event email-update
/etc/init.d/qmail restart
/etc/init.d/smtpfront-qmail restart
...
