Hello...I'm trieng to install the ldap addressbook. I think I did everything ok but apparently not. This is the error I get when I trie to add or search something:
"Couldn't load backend LDAP': could not bind to LDAP server: Invalid credentials at /home/e-smith/files/ibays/abook/cgi-bin/abook.cgi line 79

I think this something about the password???
How do I correct this problem?

I am also interested in a global address book for all users on the server, as well as having copies of their personal address books stored there.

All of my clients use IMAP and Thunderbird, and have all of their addresses stored locally, so they cannot see their address books from webmail.

I assume that ldap-abook works on e-smith 6.5 (the package only talks about 4.1.x and 5.1.x, does anyone have experience on this?

Am I going about it perferred way, or is there another / better way to have a centrally stored global and personal address books which are available both via webmail and locally under Thunderbird?

I have tried this contrib and it works but not the way I was hoping for. The problem is the global address book is created from a tab delimited text file which has to be maintained on the server. To use this contrib in an office you have to export your addressbook (tab delim) and copy it to the server everytime you have a new entry.

Here is my ideal addressbook for SME;
One person would be responsible for maintaining a master address book in Thunderbird (only this person would have write access to the master address book ldap database). Users would have read access to the master address book via ldap, the master address book would also be available via the SME webmail AND a webpage (www.yoursme.com/addressbook) Not everyone needs email but may only need to get at the phone numbers and addresses.

Any ideas?

The above append by "webweave" is exactly what I am after, with the addition that user's personal address book is also stored on the server and that they can maintain it using their favourite client (Thunderbird) and it is also accessible via webmail.
