just a few quick things i wanted to ask before i went through this change. right now as it stands runinng windows 2000, it is acting as a file server primarly as well as web/ftp with about 4 virual domains for websites
the hardware is:
Netfinity 5100
2X866 processors
512Mb system memory
6*36Gb 10k rpm drives in R5 via Serveraid 4L
DDS4 tape drive via onboard scsi
Onboard AMD based 10/100 ethernet
from what ive read this hardware should work without any problems, scsi tape drives seem to work great, and the serveraid is very well supported.
with the tests ive done with virual domains with sme on test hardware and using the information here:
http://www.aplawrence.com/SME/virtualdomain.htmlthis shouldnt be a problem at all.
my questions are as follows
1. should i expect any problems with the hardware above?
2. currently i have a 2nd linux box with a dedicated install of smoothwall, in the future i would like to migrate compleatly to SME and install a gigabit network card. my understanding is i can add a nic down the road, and reconfigure it from the console, i most likely would be going with an intel as that seems to be the nic of choice, however i would like to use a 64 bit card, even though its the same chipset will there be any problems or drawbacks?
3. since i am running a serveraid card, is it posable to install the ibm serveraid daemon and then monitor the array from a client computer.
4. as it stands now, will i notice an increase in throuput for network file transfers switching from win2k to samba?
any other comments on the above that i should take into account before doing this?
btw this is a home server, as for why its so overkill, i got a deal on it i couldnt pass up...
