Fortigate alternatives?
« on: June 01, 2005, 07:33:43 PM »
Hi all,
does anybody know (cheaper) alternatives to the Fortigate 60, either as a hardware box or as a software solution?
I already know f-secure gatekeeper, which works great, but is licensed per user and therefore expensive for many users, and it does not install on SME6.
Thanks,
Michael

Astaro Secure Linux is a nice alternative.  It is an all in one firewall with built in AV filtering a la the Fortigate. There's a no cost five user version on Astaro's site but the AV is extra.  You may also wish to consider a separate proxy such as Trend Micro's Interscan VirusWall.  This comes in a Linux flavor that runs fine on Centos (the RHEL clone).  If also catches spyware.

Of course, SME Server can do gateway antivirus filtering via Dans Guardian and ClamAV.  Check out dungog.net for a nicely packaged version of this.

1. Try "www.clarkconnect.com", it has much of the funcionality of Astaro and cost only $65.00 the license. Personally I use it like my firewall/proxy for about 4 years.

2. Other option it´s "www.ipcop.org"

3. And other "www.censornet.com".

Good luck.

I downloaded CensorNet and installed it on a spare computer today - and I have to say: Wow! - it is very well done. Almost too many bells and whistles.
