Topic: Sendmail program location in 5.6?

I'm NEW to linux. Heck I'm a dos command line nut. I retired back in 91 so I thought I'd be nice and help the guys at church get a server working for their website and stuff. I've still got a copy of winblows 1.0 on floppy here for crying out loud...

I do NOT know Linux worth a hole in the head. I'm just the dummy that was available and told the pastor at church that I'd give it a try running the server for him. I didn;t think the stress was gonig to lead to a heart attack or something like it.
 
Heck I've just figured out that cd /usr/lib gets me to that directory for crying out loud. I'm used to cd\ not cd/  .....
 
In 5.6 where the heck is the sendmail program at? Is it #!/var/qmail/bin   or  #!/usr/bin/perl or where? I just got told the guys at church that I'm trying to help with the server stuff want to run scripts "that need Perl or the exact location of the sendmail program" and with this program I can't find spit. Heck I'm ready to jump to Redhat 9. At least with the gui in it I can find my way around the disk....
     
Any PLAIN english dummy level plain talk help will be greatly appreciated. I need someone, ANYONE, to speak plain old dummy english for an old fart that is just learning.

Sendmail is not used, qmail is.  What are you trying to do?  Most of the configuration is done through the server manager.  On a computer on the lan side of the server, put in the IP address of the server in a browser, like so:
http://yourserverip/server-manager

This should bring up a username and password box.  Put in admin for the user and the password for root (Remember, linux IS case sensitive).
This should log you into the server manager.  Most of the post-configuration is done here.  

If you need to configure IP info, log into the comand line on the server itself with username admin and the root password .  This will bring up a configuration menu.

One of the guys at church said it would be nice if they were able ot run formail. It's a script he got from a place called Matt's script Archive. I tried to install it for them. Leapftp let me do the chmod thing but apparently the path to the sendmail program is wrong.

How do I find that out? In 5.6 is it #!/var/qmail/bin or #!/usr/bin/perl or where? This is a standard install. I haven't added a thing. (Cause I don't know how to do spit and am at least awake enough to know that if it runs don't mess with it.)

Can someone tell me how to figure out the path thing so I can try to get this formmail.pl thing working for them? Thanks.

formmail.pl is notorious for being used by spammers. If you can avoid using it, do. If you must use it, be very careful. Read, for example:

There is a sendmail symlink in both the "usual" places, i.e. /usr/sbin/sendmail and /usr/lib/sendmail. The program which is actually run is /var/qmail/bin/sendmail

Thanks for the help in finding the sendmail program. Now the next question. Does SME run Perl?

The formail.pl file that the guys at church insit they "just have to have" has a line in it

#!/usr/bin/perl

Does SME have perl installed in it or can I somehow install it? Please let me know. Thank you.

I really loveit when you get people that post replies like they're God and the rest of us have to grovel as we don't have 'their' level of knowldege....

Look sweetheart. I retired over 15 years ago. I'm tryting my best to help the church set up their server as I'm the only available Joe that is willing to ty to do so. The last tihng I need is a smart a.. reply alright.

I have looked to the bet of my ability. I have gone through the back up where it confirms everything it backs up to the desktop on my regular machine. It has no mention of Perl at all. I have tried to browse around the server as best I can and can't see Perl there anywhere.

I thought if I can;t find it then maybe I'm not looking in the right place or doing it correctly as I'm NEW TO LINUX and am retired. As I don;t know jack I thought hey ask the question. I did NOT think I'd get a 10 year old with a GOD COMPLEX giving a smart fart reply.

I aksed because I don;t know. Maybe as you grow up you'll realize that you too do not know everything and just maybe you'll humble yourself to trhe same level as the rest fo us mere mortals and aska question to learn an answer... Then again maybe not as a person has to be humble enought to admit they don't know everything...

Now can maybe someone who has any amount of descency try to answer the question? Does SME server 5.6 or 6 have Perl installed with the standard install? If not where can I get it and how do I instrall it?
