Topic: SME 7

Hi,

I just had a new server delivered today and thought I'd take SME 7 a21 for a test drive on it.  Unfortunately, it said "No Drives Recognized would you like to select a driver manually" so I bailed out..   I booted up with 6.01 custom and it worked fine.   I really would've expected the opposite to be true.

The new server is:

    HP ProLiant ML350 G4
     •    3.2GHz Intel Xeon
     •    1GB RAM
     •    CD-ROM
     •    10/100/1000 Ethernet
     •    Tower
   (2) HP 146.8GB Ultra320 Universal Hot-Plug Disk Drive, 10K rpm

Any suggestions?

Notice scsi issues mentioned in other threads.
Solution is installing harddisk drivers as specified  before.

edit: That said, I can't seem to find what I'm talking about...  
Installing scsi drivers from floppy during boot from install cd, anyone?

After sifting through all these links - I see things explaining why Compaq SCSI might not work on 6.0.1 (but mine does recognize it)  - and I also see things explaining why the SME 7 might have problems with the VMWare virtual SCSI (solution seems to be to go IDE).

Am I searching for the wrong terms?  Searching the wrong site?

Nope, you searched pretty good (I'd say).
My point with 7.0 is that BusLogic scsi drivers are no longer included (although mtpbase drivers are, which in VMware shows as LSI logic).

Basically, you need:
The linux (RHEL4 compatible) drivers for your drive(s) on floppy or so.
The command to interrupt the installation so you may tell it to pick up on those drivers before continuing.

Unfortunatly, I don't have that ready...(command)
I'll look around some more.

Maybe anyone else can help?

Well, I've been able to setup a query for driver-disk, which is where my quest ends, as I don't have drivers, or a disk for that matter.

At the "boot:" prompt, type "text accept dd" instead of "install". Follow instructions, and you should get you one step further...

I believe there may be a thing or two around here about creating the driver disk...

It works fine with 6.0.1 - but not with 7.  Should these  same solutions work for 7?

Keep in mind that this is alpha release software, meaning that development work is proceeding as we speak. Alpha21 is also the first CentOS4 version released, so it's quite possible there are lot's of basic things still to be sorted out.

Keep testing & keep watching & keep reporting your experiences ideally as bug reports (see below).
Sourceforge site is the main area to date for information re sme7 alpha releases.

You're right...

Let's make this a bit clearer:
The info is for 6.0.1
There isn't any need for extra drivers in 6.0.1, it installs fine as is.
It's 7a21 which does not support the scsi drives used, and the solution which comes to mind is indeed using a driver disk.

eiceic, could you tell us the type of the scsi drives?
It would help as I would then be able to tinker with a driver disk, even though I don't need drivers I suppose I can always try to load them

- You shouldn't expect anyone to help you with an alpha release
- The only reason you should be installing an alpha release is to find problems (as you have) and report them to the developers (which I think you have not).

I agree -- maybe my post didn't sound that way, but my intent was to get the new server in the door -- play around with SME 7 for an hour to see how it's coming, and then put 6.0.1 on it.   Up to this point, I had only tried SME 7 under vmware and I wanted to take it for a real test drive.  I was just surprised that the SME 6 recognized the drive and SME 7 didn't and was looking for some reasons that might explain it - which I got and I appreciate.

I just put SME 7 on one of my older / IDE servers yesterday and so far it's looking great.  I'm going to run it through all of my usual hoops and report back the feedback (would sourceforge be the best place?).  Thanks for all of your hard work!
