Help for network configuration
« on: June 09, 2005, 01:52:31 PM »
Hello all,

I installed SME 6.0.1 on my server and I success configured it only one time. I did some configuration modifications (for use dyndys commercial and an IP static) and I can’t anymore configure it correctly again. I tried to change all configuration: modem (DHCP, NAT, routing ports, firewall …) and SME without success.
I need some help. If someone can tell me what protocols and services to choice, I think I will be able to configure all devices and machines.

Materials:
- 1 server: AMD 650MHz 512Mo with 2 Ethernet cards
- 1 modem/bridge (with firewall) Efficient Networks speedstream 52xx
- 1 switch: 3com OfficeConnect switch 8
- 1 client at this moment: Windows XP

I’d like to:
- use my switch
- use both of the Ethernet cards on my server
- use my DYNDNS commercial service to access from the Internet to my server for web sites and eventually FTP sites (at this moment)
- use the firewall of my modem (more effective than the SME firewall ?)
- use “ Obtain an IP address from DHCP” on the client

My ISP provides me a dynamic ip address.

My problems:
- How to use the web modem interface from the SME server or anywhere? I directly connect the modem to my client machine to configure the modem? It’s not an easily solution :)
- Do I configure the external Ethernet connector with static IP, DHCP …?
- Which ip ranges must I used to haven’t a conflict on my client machine?

If you need more information, ask me.

Thanks you for your help.

If you use another firewall, you don't need two NIC on the server. Just configure it as server-only with single NIC behind your firewall/modem and connect to the same switch as your workstation. From your firewall-modem forward ports needed (HTTP, SMTP etc..) to SME server's IP.
Note: it may be better to use your modem as modem/bridge only instead and use SME as your firewall-server. You'de need to define your requrements first.

The best layout would be ISP -> existing router -> SME server -> switch -> workstations.  If the router is handing out an IP address to the SME server you'll do well to set an entirely different range for the LAN, i.e. if your router hands out addresses in the 192.168.0.X range you might consider using 10.X.X.X for the LAN side; that way you won't have any ambiguities.

Though if you have any notion of providing services to the Internet you'll find it most convenient to put the router in bridged mode and let the SME server handle the firewalling; that way you won't have to take the extra step of configuring the router to pass incoming traffic to the appropriate port on the SME server's external interface.
