SME guest OS on Windows VMWARE session
« on: June 24, 2005, 05:23:30 PM »
Hello, does anyone have any experience or comments about running SME 6.01 in a vmware (workstation) session within XP.
I am trying to consolidate a few of my home servers and VMWARE looks the way forward.
SME would be a Mail server on my DMZ on one VMWARE and possibly an MPĀ£ server on my internal network.
Thanks.

Many people run SME as a guest OS in VMWare for testing and debuging. For permanent "production" server, I wouldn't run it on the host, that needs frequent reboots and not as stable by itself.

SME on VMware

Hi Guys,

I have been running a production SME v6.01-x on VMware 5.0 and previously on v4.5.x for the last 9 months.

My host is W2K3 Entreprise serving as a storage server for my company and VMware Workstation running on top as a guest for the Firewall, Squid, Dansguardian and ClamAv/SpamAssasin.

Server built by myself 1 year ago, specs:

Asus P4P800-E Deluxe MoBo

3Gigs of PC3200/400MHz RAM

2x 3COM c905CTX NICs, 1 for LAN, 1 for WAN/Internet
VMware Workstation v5.0 running 2 SMEs VMs. (1 for Firewall/HTTP server and 1 for Testing Web Dev).

1x Promise FastTrak SX4-M (SATA RAID 5 card)

4x Seagate 300Gb SATA 150/1.5Gbps NCQ drives (Data only)

2x Western Digital IDE 200Gb in RAID 1 config for OS.

Server used for Video storage, Music repository internal only - no bittorrent nor P2P allowed, Image Storage and lots of BD crunching for different customers (MySQL and MS-SQL are used depending on customer data source).

VMware is used to simulate and test ISA2004, SharePoint Portals and I host forums with Xoops under Linux of course for different schools.

Why use W2K3 Enterprise instead of Linux, SATA RAID Card wasn't supported under this old kernel "RH 7.3".

Maybe once SME comes up to pace with RHES 4 or a 2.6.x kernel then I will think of switching everything to SME, but for now no way.

My 2 cents.

Luis

Running it on dedicated server is a bit different. Original question was about running it on Windows XP and I assume that it is poster's workstation, not a standalone server.

Hi Boris,

Yeah, no problem on running VMware on XP to have some SME Guest VMs.

Do not forget to disable the Power Saving features of XP and depending on the load get one or more case fans to offer better ventilation and a cooler environment.

BTW, I use XP and VMware Workstation 5.0 on my laptop to run production environments to access different clients networks.

I have in the past, run demos and presentations at our local Linux-Meetup's and LUGs of SME, SuSE, Xandros.

Can't live without VMware now at the server level and personal level.

Good luck,
