external printer server & sme 6.01-01
« on: June 22, 2005, 05:19:57 PM »
Hi

I have found a odl (but working!) Axis 540+ External (and parallel) print server and decide to test it.

I´d like to configure a queue on SME and PS to download work from there.
So I´d have the best of both worlds: PS speed and SME storage!

I have created a queue (xerox4517) as Network printer, and told SME the IP address of PS and choose RAW mode.

But when I print a page on that queue... nothing happens!

How I can fix this? How can I debug this?
(I also search for in /var/spool/lpd/xerox4517  ... but nothing there!)

Thanks

You need to add that network device to the hostnames panel first. The printer config can't talk to it if sme doesn't know it's there.
So add xerox4517 to hostnames panel.

Hi Ray

Thanks by your answer but I do not understand it!
Let´s start from beggining:

1) configurated printer queue (xerox4517enc) on SME panel as network printer w/IP 192.168.77.250 and RAW mode.

2) configurated print server w/IP 192.168.77.250.
On Network setting of PS I have
On tab TCPIP:
"Enable Reverse Telnet Option Enabled=yes" and "PR1 TCP Port Number = 515"
On tab Windows/OS2:
Name Printer "xerox4517enc" for PR1

3) And just in case create a host with IP and name:
xerox4517enc 192.168.77.250

But I don´t understant how the print server get the printing from SME... if it does... or how SME send to PS...

I heard about to use passthru as printer name... but couldn´t understand!

Can you help me giving me more background?

Thanks

If your sme server is a DHCP server with the range of typically 192.168.xx.65 to 192.168.xx.250 then you need to use an IP that is not in that range eg use 192.168.77.20 . Change the hostname to match.

I'm not familiar with that device you mentioned but I assumed it was a network device that you plugged into the LAN network cable outlet eg Cat5e UTP socket.
The printer signals are sent from the sme server to the device via the LAN cabling.

Is that what you have ?

Ray

My PrintServer (PS for now on!) is outside DHCP range.
I have DHCP range config from 20~194 with lower reserver to servers/firewall/... and higher to appliances (PS,Wifi AP...).
I´ll be sure the queue names on PS and SME are the same and do other tests tomorrow morning.

Thank you by URL to SME manual.

About how negociations are iniciated between SME and PS... I´d like to know if SME look for raw (or any other configurated queue name on that IP or if PS search for a queue name on all network)
But I´ll discover tomorrow morning... I´ll spent 2 hours with this and I´m I´ll manage it! :-)

Thank you
