Help with internet connection please!
« on: March 20, 2004, 09:42:56 PM »
I'm running SME 6.0, and trying to configure as a server and gateway.  My WAN is through Direcway satellite, the modem has to connect to a switch and then to the WAN nic in  the computer...if I try to connect the modem directly to the internet nic, i fail to connect.  Hooking the modem to a switch then to the nic I can test my internet connection from the computer, and all connects OK.  The problem is in trying to connect to the internet from my workstations (WinXP).  I allow DHCP from the server, ipconfig shows the workstations are configured properly, with the server as the gateway. My workstations connect to the server fine, thru another switch. I can connect and get my email from my internet provider (www.1bigred.com) from each workstation but I cannot connect and view web pages such as www.1bigred.com or yahoo.  In the bar along the bottom of the screen it says locating then connecting to the web page, but then I get an error that says connection refused.  I figure I've got the uplink from the server to the internet configured OK, I'm just missing something between the server  and the workstations... any help appreciated.

Which Direcway modem(s) do you have? If you have the DW 4000 system with Two-way service you have to use internet connection sharing on a Windows machine in order for it to work and the software does not run on Linux to the best of my knoledge, which is limited at this point.
If you have the DW 6000,then there is no software installed on any computer and you should be able to use a router and a switch to set up the network.
I don't know if this will help or not. I am interested in knowing as I too have DW and would like to hear how things worked out for you, especially if you have the  DW 4000 system.

I have sme version 6.5 installed, and was using it as a diaup server/gateway with excellent results. I now have a Direcway DW6000 but after installing a new NIC (3COM 3C509), I cannot seem to get the computers on my network connected through the SME server. I am able to connect directly to the internet through the DW6000's gateway address, and it is acting as a DHCP server, but I am not sure how to properly configure to use SME as the intermediary.

I tried configuring the SME box using all three possibilities (two DHCP and one assigning the gateway address as a static IP), and the SME system DOES indicate that it can get to the internet when I run the test from the user console, however as I mentioned, I can't connect any of my LAN boxen to the internet.

Any help is appreciated. I tried searching for direcway, but there are no specific answers.

Can someone provide some assistance?

Are your LAN boxen configured to:

1) Use your SME server as their default gateway?
2) Use the http proxy on the SME server?

Either of those should allow web access from the LAN (since you've already verified that the server can access Internet).

Thanks for the suggestion Charlie. Which option would you use for the internal network, ip address of server?

How about the external one? Which would you recommend?

Thanks, Jim Darrough

For what it's worth. Afer we changed to the DW6000 we had some issues perhaps some of the information that I got will help you, if not I wasted space.
DW6000 has a built in router, you cannot disable it it will not work with most routers even when you disable the DNS server in the router.Further more the only way that we we able to log on to any HTTPS sites was to get a secure HTTPS IP and reset the DNS and add an addtional DNS. The DNS thye gave me is 66.82.4.8 the Alt is  198.77.116.8.These were provided by DW after 3 days of pure agravation and many calls. We still cannot FTP. The secure HTTPS that they gave us is 62.190.127.113 port 3128. Also it'set to bypass proxy for Http www.direcway.com; and 192.168.0.1
Maybe this will help. I'd like to know before I bring the SME on the network. For what it's worth advanced tech support @ DW says that DW is not compatable with any type of linux system.
Good Luck  :pint:  :hammer:

You may need to try the following in your web browser go to the LAN setting and set use no proxy for the IP address of your SME server.
Had the same problem with a T1 Internet connect and this worked

Well just an update DW is sending my issues to engineering. Seems that there is sometype of issue with the proxys and some other issues that are causing all this headache.
So as things progress I'll pass it on perhaps it will help someone else  :hammer:  :-x    :-?

7/20/05 Update
Finally have everything working on the Direcway 6000 system. Settings are: use a proxy server for LAN and bypass for local addresses, and www.direcwaysupport.com;192.168.0.1.
Everything goes thru the https setting, not http. I.P, DNS and any other settings depend on the satilite that you are locked to. You would have to get the settings from advanced tech support or engineering. Dunno if this will help any one but here it is.
