System Monitor Question
« on: June 27, 2005, 08:53:59 PM »
Over the last weekend my SME Server/firewall started behaving very oddly. I checked the charts in the System Monitor today (Monday) and they look very strange. Can anyone direct me to a How-To or FAQ that will help me interpret these charts?

Thanks.

Can you tell us how it's behaving? Perhaps someone here can shed a little light on it for you.

Starting Friday evening, CPU utilization roughly tripled from about 2% to about 7%. System Load / %CPU showed a similar % increase but at much lower levels. The other major change was on eth0 and eth1. Both spiked up and stayed up from roughly zero to roughly 120 K. This condition continued until Monday morning. When the janitor came in early Monday the firewall box was "rattling" so he hit the reset button. When I came in several hours later all data tracks were back to normal and have remained so.

This system is a firewall for a small elementary school. This time of the year there is almost no Internet traffic going through it.

So what happened?

If it was me I would go into the Panel or a Command line and look at the access logs, Kernel, etc... The rattling sounds like hardware.

The only thing I can thing of that would rattle would be a HDD or FAN. I doubt it was the fan because after it rebooted everything was fine.

My thoughts are the HDD is failing. Try looking at the actual Logs from the Server-Manager Panel and maybe post some here.
