Dial-up Connectivity

Hi - I've set-up E-smith 4.1.2 on a venerable old P166 and it's running beautifully.  I connect this to my main PC via a X-over cable, and the E-smith box dials into my ISP via a 56kbps modem.  All fine so far....

I'm using the E-smith box as a gateway, and nothing further at this time.  I want it to dial automatically when required to access the 'Net or my e-mail (hosted by the ISP), but I basically don't want it to disconnect until either I tell it to or it reaches a inactivity timeout of, say, 30 minutes.  At the moment it is disconnecting after 2-3 minutes (yeah, I know I can change this :) ) and I'm having to reconnect.  How do I customise the inactivity disconnect settings to ones other than those built-in to the program?

I know this isn't really what E-smith is designed for, but the caching works like a dream and the 'Net is flying now (well, as fast as it ever gets in the Northern Territory of Australia...)  I also like it's NAT (if that's what it is!)

I have the user-guide, but find it isn't too explicit at times.  Any suggestions for pubs I might purchase?

/etc/e-smith/templates/etc/diald.filter/*
copy to
/etc/e-smith/templates-custom/etc/diald.filter/*
and edit httphold or whatever variable

expand templates see e-smith-org customising link
