« on: July 17, 2005, 04:51:30 AM »
Hi guys; I setup my router and active one VPN connection on my SME 6.5 server for me it looks ok, but when i'm out of my network and tried to use the VPN it always gets stock on request user and passwords. i set my user with VPN rights and i tried diferent ways to enter the user like (mydomain\user) and the password, enter the domain is domain box, user and password. the fun part is when i'm in my network the VPN works.

i got all ports fowared to SME server and i don't know how to fix this.

If I understand right, you used the built in VPN of your router.
The only thing you need to setup in the router is a
forward rule for port 1723 and tell it to what IP
(the server IP) it should forward.

Is there any other firewall that might block this access from the outside?

PPTP user validation
« Reply #2 on: July 18, 2005, 02:43:11 AM »
On my SME server in http://myserver/server-manager I increase the connections from 0 to 1 and I set my user with VPN. On my router I forward the PPTP that is on the list of services to my SME server. I know that the router is pointing to the server because when I set the amount of connections to 0 in Number of PPTP clients and I tried to connect it’s refused the connection automatically, but when I set up one or more connections it pass for the process of validations but not recognize my user and password.  I tried to connect from different ISP but same thing happened. Just to check I open the VPN connection inside my network and works, but I want to connect to my network when I’m out of my home. I don’t know if this is much information but basically my setup is:
1)   When I’m out of home I open my icon for my home VPN.
2)   This is receiving by my router.
3)   My router forwards this to my SME server.
4)   SME server should validate my user and password.
5)   I’ll be connected to my network.

For some reason I can’t pass from step 4.

Hi lguzman....I have a similar arrangement as you and appear to be having a similar problem, however, I am using 6.01 plus script updated. Upon login my username/pw is not validated. When I change from 1 connection to 0 in remote access my attempts are instantly denied.

Are you running in server/gateway mode or Server mode? I am currently in server only mode and wonder if VPN will only work in server/gateway mode???

Have you made any further progress on remote connections?

Thanks

hi paul_sc, yes was sucessful conecting to my VPN. i found that my problem was the firewall at the network that i was using to connect. i still don't know why block my VPN and others no. but then i try it with diferent ISP and not with my company network and it works. Did your try to connect with diferent ISP?

Thanks lguzman. In my case there are no substitute ISPs to try. I am going to drop another nic into the server and put into gateway/server mode to bypass our firewall and see if that solves the problem.

Thanks for your report.

What type of router are you using? On some routers you need to enable RIP before VPN will work. Also make sure the router is passing port 1723 and GRE (protocol 47). I'm familiar with quite a few different types of routers, so let me know how you go and I might be able to help further.

Thanks...It is an old sonicwall soho3, so not really in the ranks of a sophisticated router. I don't have protocol 47 open..not sure it can do that. I saw something about fragmented vpn packets..maybe i need that on too. I will tool around with it now and see what happens.

Well, it is not the ISP. I set up another server dual nic server/gateway bypassing our FW and all worked fine.

At first it did not connect, but then I realized I forgot to set the user as a vpn client in server manager  :hammer:

If I can schedule some downtime, I will try my production server this week.
