Topic: Domain Name - Local intranet, or Public address confusion

I have download SME and reading up before installing.  I am confused about the domain name.  Is this a local domain or public domain for website and after the @ in email addresses?

If so - I am setting up this server for a small private school that has only had internet/file sharing, and now going to do roaming profiles and gateway through SME server.  The school has a website that is hosted by another company, so we have a domain for the site and email.  I would rather the service company remain hosting the website (in case of server crashes and I can't get to the server right away), but not the email.  I want to administer the email on site. How do I do this?  

Do I need another domain name, or can I use the one we already have?   Can I split up email and website?  Wouldn't both a website and email have to come from the same IP address, or can they be split up like this?  Can their server and mine both have the same domain name (even though I don't want the website)?

Please help.  This has been confusing for me.

Hi there,

I believe you can have email seperate from hosting. All you would have to do is change the MX records for that domain name and that should work. I've never done this so I can't comment on how it would be done or if it even works like this. Perhaps someone else can clarify?

I put my website address "domain.co.uk" in as the hostname as I was manually pointing my domain at my server but this can be a local hostname such as "servername.home". Since you are using this as a gateway, I presume you would have to put in a fully qualified domain name, probably the one you have hosted on your current webserver if you want it to handle mail for this domain.

I have a number of machines setup like this.
Private server & gateway.
Domain name is the windows workgroup; at home I use "home", and at work it's "controlsystems".

The machines at home use sme-fetchmail, and fetch mail from my ISP. Outgoing mail is sent directly from the smeserver. My home users access their mail with the webmail interface (horde imp).
