Newbie again! SME installed, can't connect to the internet!
« on: August 01, 2005, 01:30:11 PM »
Hi again.....
OK, got v7alpha26 installed and all seems ok, and have attached to the local network and the adsl router. Getting link lights on both, and sme box v5.6 is happily connecting.  Can't seem to get out tho.  Have checked that my ip address isn't being blocked, and getting activity on the router when i try to ping say google.co.uk, but no joy.
What i'm asking is what is the best method for troubleshooting this - i'm not overly familiar with linux, so please help!!!

Do you mean ADSL router or modem?  For ADSL where I live, you need to register the mac address of the network card(s) connected for it to work.  Maybe that's your problem.

The command ifconfig is similar to ipconfig in windows.  That should help to see what's going on.

Cheers greg.
Good command to know. I'll have a gander to check if both interfaces are up & running, tx and rx.  Bit of an odd one this. My ISP is the local council, connecting via a router running NAT, so in theory it shouldn't matter my ip address or mac address inside, but the council keep the config of the routers a grand secret!
