Is this a good server for SME 6.01??
« on: August 20, 2005, 03:14:05 AM »
I am about to upgrade my SME server from my old, but very dependable installation.  I am asking opinions/experiences from the community:

The specs for the server I am looking at:

Dual Pentium III 1 Ghz Processors
Dual 18 Gig SCSI HD's
512 Mb RAM
SCSI Controller: Adaptec AIC-7899

The following is a link to the actual unit on the mfg'rs site:http://support.mpccorp.com/apps/complist.asp?SerialNo=otc1250132

The server is a few years old, but the price is right.  I have used SME for 2 years and intend to use it for many more.  I just have no experience with the SCSI options. By the way, the installation will be for my home network, which sports a couple of web pages, a couple of message boards, FTP site, email, File server, and databases.  None of these services gets hit very hard, but dependability is important.

All comments / hints will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance...

MJ

Hi,

I'm running SME on a very similar box.
Mine:
SME 6.5
Dual P3 1.2ghz
512mb Ram
120gb IDE HDD

I have a had a little bit to do with scsi, but I have never installed it with SME. I have controlers cards and hard drives, but I don't want to use them. Why? Because they are noisy. My server is running in a similar setup to yours its a home server running a couple of web pages, mail etc. I don't like the noise that SCSI produces. I would recommend buying cheap IDE (plus you'll get a larger drive).

If you still want to go SCSI, I did a quick search and found this: http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=10250.msg38652#msg38652

But as for the rest of the box, Mine sits around doing nothing all day (don't think it's ever reacher 25% utilisation), and I've never shut it down except for when I moved house recently. I just goes and goes. Some one else may want to comment on the Motherboard and it's compatibility, I've never heard of that one.

.. as a guide, I have recently picked up a dual 933 Compaq DL380G!, Redundant PSU, 512MB RAM, No HDD's for about A$200.

Beauty of these units are they are very reliable, everything redundant, and they have an onbaorad SCSI RAID controller - add 3 9GB HS HDD's for 18GB RAID5.

Cheap as chips and runs great.
