Poweredge 500SC - RAID 1 on 6.0.1

Hi There,

Got a P/E 500SC on the way.  1.13GB PIII, 512MB RAM, 80GB IDE.  It has a Promise FastTrak TX2000 RAID card in it.  I noticed on an earlier thread that this card required some special setup since it is not recognized by the stock kernel.

Is it best just to avoid using this card and going with the two IDE channels for RAID 1 in software?  This box is going to be a file server only, supporting 12-15 users.  I would like to find out if this card would be worth the hassle of setting up.  Two small databases (Access and Quickbooks) will be located there as well.  As you can tell, not a lot of stuff going on with this box.

I can tinker with the best of them, but don't have a lot of time...  I want to keep it simple.

Also, what PCI IDE card would you recommend for a backup device?  I would like to keep the two built-in channels dedicated for the RAID drives by themselves.  I have been considering some tape drives, but the Iomega Rev is appealing although it requires a special setup.  Would SCSI be a better choice?

TIA,
Kevin
