Problems with Macs storing files on SME 6.0.1-1

Hi all,

Not having much Mac exposure, I thought I'd ask. Searching the forums did not turn up anyone else with this problem.

I put in a new SME 6.0.1-1 server for a client to support the 2 Macs in their art room. 2 ibays were setup, one called archive for archived work and one call current for their current work.

One Mac is a G4 running OS X Ver. 10.2.6
The other is a G5 running OS X Ver. 10.3.4

The problem is as follows :-
The G5 user (who is the heavier of the 2 users) have started copying files to the archive ibay. He noticed that the files that are copied across are being scrambled :-

a) filenames gets messed up
b) file locations get messed up (eg. file1 belonging to folder1 appears in folder2 instead, etc.)
c) file contents sometimes gets messed up as well (eg. photoshop files gets corrupted and cannot be opened, etc.)
d) some of the files that have been copied across cannot be deleted from his Mac

Yet, files copied to the ibay called current copies fine and appear to be OK as well. Permissions on both ibays are identical.

I got him to do similar tests from the G4 and the G4 has no problem copying files to and from both ibays.

I have also run file copy and compare tests from a Windows PC to and from the ibays with no problems.

Does anyone know what could be causing the file copy issues from the G5 ?

At this stage, I don't know if the G5 is connecting to the SME server by SMB or Appletalk and I have asked the user to check and get back to me. I've also asked the user to make sure he does not have file names which have special characters as well which may be supported on the Mac but not the SME server.

Other than that, I don't know enough about the Mac to go much further.

TIA for any help.

Kelvin

I find it's a little more reliable to connect to 6.01 via AFP than using SMB. Click Finder, then Go | Connect to Server ... , then type afp://SERVER_NAME and connect.

unless there are some reasons not to - have the G5 updated to 10.3.8 (the 10.3.9 is the latest 10.3.x so far and may be the last)

if it's sme 6.0.x then it is netatalk 1.5.5 on it which behaves sometimes unpredictably under heavy loads and or files >2GB.

for G4 (10.2.x) cif (ie samba ie smb://) connection will be buggy

in both cases X will not transfer apple file information correctly as 10.2.x and 10.3.x do behave differently

if your server is stable then search for howto to upgrade to netatalk 2 - the performance is much better. If the server crashes (power out or whatever - ie not correst reboot) then the cnid (whatever that means) database are going corrupt and a share cannpt be monted - otherwise it works a lot better (long filenames, faster transfer etc)

  :pint:   looks like SME 7 will include netatalk 2 by default  :pint:  :pint:  :pint:  :pint:

Netatalk 2.0 MUST BE INCLUDED in the next release!!!!

Netatalk 1.5 is diabolical for OS X, — if lots of files and folders are dragged and dropped (like more than about, say, one file) then files can get put in hidden directories, (.Appledouble) (and when they go 'poof' before your eyes, when one clicks on them) and not only that, differing files have their names and content mixed up!!!! I had to go in as root and clear the lot out.

* Or Include nettalk as a legacy system, installed but not running as a default!!!! As OS X can use  samba.

HOW do I turn netatalk off????

* Or allow ibay access via sftp other than as the root.

Using mac os 10.3.9

I am just testing SME at this point.

found a netatalk 2.0 rpm, but the cascading dependancies scared me silly.

How do I turn netalk off for good?
How do I nuke netalk 1.5?

It should be an option off by default in the config text shell.

Please don't shout - it's not a nice way to ask for something to happen.

Netatalk 2.0 is in 7.0alpha - please test, and report issues in the bug tracker:

https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=96750&atid=615772

(and only there, please).
