Newbie help with ibay setup only
« on: August 23, 2005, 04:19:27 PM »
I am a newbie to SME server and Linux in general. I have some experience with Windows and Windows networking. I am installing a server for my Church to replace a Windows 98 client used as a simple peer to peer file server. I want to use Linux as it is a much better operating system.

I need help in troubleshooting why my Windows PC's cannot see the
ibay's. I get a password prompt when I try to access the server.
I have the correct workgroup name as the Windows PC's can see the server using Network neighborhood.

My install of SME server went just fine. I set it up no DHCP, no DNS, no email. I only wanted ibays for the Windows clients to use for a multiple client database software which will run on SAMBA 3.X per the software manufacturer.

I set up two ibays as a test.
I named the ibays with a name less than 12 caracters.
Group:everyone
User access: Write=admin read=everyone
Public access: Local network (no password required)
Execution: disabled

I did not set up users or groups as I assumed users were set up for email
and other services.

I did not have a DNS server before. I am using a DSL modem as a
DHCP server as there are only 6 PC's on the network.
The SME server is on the same subnet and netmask but has a
fixed IP outside the DHCP address range.

If need to I can go to the command line of linux, log in as root
but I do not know command line syntax very well but I have good
reference material to start a modest learning curve. I would like
to avoid heavy command line work if possible. The reason I liked
SME server is the lack of heavy command line configuration.

Do I need to make Workgroup and Domain controller Yes?
It is now no.

Or is the password prompt a symptom of some other basic configuration
change needed?

If you are not going to set up users - then you will need to use the admin username/password combo to access the shares.

Set up users. You will give yourself control over ibay access etc.

They need only log in once.

do the user names need to match the Windows computer names, capitalization etc. Is that how access is confirmed? or by log in only?

do the user names need to match the Windows computer names,

If you arrange the SME user names and passwords to be the same as the user names and passwords on your Windows workstations, then the workstations will not need to display additional log-in screens when a user tries to access the i-bays. Your users will be authenticated on the server automatically.

Problem fixed. Setting up users properly allowed ibay function.

Thanks for the newbie help.
