Creating a Template in SME V5
« on: November 17, 2001, 05:00:48 AM »
Ok here is my question. I am running SME V5. And I would like the httpd.conf  file to have this in it.

I would like the access/error logs to be placed in one of my secured IBays but I do not know how to create templates. I don't want to edit the httpd.conf file seeing as the last few times within 10 hours all of the services on the server crashed and would not start up AGAIN.

how would I make it so my access and error logs would go to. lets say

/home/e-smith/files/ibays/fakeibay/html/logs/*

and would it be better to just have 1 log file and then setup up my cron.weekly to move or copy the file out of the logs folder.

well any help or tips would be greatly appreciated..

And Thanks in advance.

- First things first:  You should read some of the documentation on the design and setup of ESSG 4.1.2 and SME V5.  Go check the link below for information of customizing your server:
http://www.e-smith.org/custom/

- Second, couldn't you just use your browser to access server-manager which would allow you to "see" these logs?

- You should not be modifying the httpd.conf file directly (see above link on customizations) as those will be overwritten.  BUT, I'm not sure why your server is "crashing" like this...sure doesn't seem right.  When you say the services would not start up again - what services?  Did you try restarting them manually?  More info on this would be helpful so people here could help you.

- I'm sure there are several ways to handle this, but you might be more specific with what you are trying to do and why...that way people could try to provide instruction or other information.

Well first I am not able to access the computer after it crashes so I can't really tell you what is going on with the machine.

But I can tell you that some of the stuff I saw had happened about 6 hours after I installed the update to 2. So I am gonna try it without the update for now.

Also should I do a reboot everynight to prevent this from happening? or what?

And all that I am trying to do is host websites. Because of the connection I have there service singles out mail so all I can do from the machine is send out e-mail but not recieve it.

Every Service works on the machine so there is no problem with that, but it does tend to crash and not restart even when I log into the machine physically, even though I restart allot of the services it still doesn't restart the services, even at the drastic thing of just sending the /etc/e-smith/blah/blah/blah/reboot

it doesn't start any of the services, packages, or ports. it is almost like a dumb terminal, no matter what I do in the settings and restarting services or the machine it doesn't do anything.

Well that is pretty much it.
