Backup2ws as standard?
« on: September 19, 2005, 10:44:33 PM »
Hi there,

I think all that have used it will agree that DMay's Backup2WS contrib is an excellent and invaluable extension to a great operating system.

My question is, would it not be a good addition to version 7 to have this as part of the final product and not as a contrib? I realise that there are many things that people find useful on an individual basis but i'm pretty sure that we'll all agree that backups are paramount on everyone's setup.

Thoughts?

It is unlikely to be in 7.0, but there will be a process soon to install addons via the yum panel in SME7.  Contribs that meet the guidelines (which are yet to be written) will be included so they can be seen by the yum panel as optional software to install.

Have you tried the rpm here?
http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/dmay/smeserver/7.x/

I'd suggest testing it thoroughly and reporting any problems to Darrell and to this thread.

Greg, thanks for the reply.

I have been having a quick look at 7b2 over the past week or so and I'm liking what I see. I will fresh install 7 and do some tests on Backup2WS and report back.

Right,

I did a fresh install of SME 7beta2 and decided to install Backup2WS again and log everything that happened.

Copied rar-3.3.0-1.1.el3.dag.i586.rpm, and smeserver-backup2ws-0.0.1-22dmay.noarch.rpm over to the server ready for installing.

Proceeded to install and got the following:

Code: [Select]
[root@smev7b2 files]# ls
rar-3.3.0-1.1.el3.dag.i586.rpm  smeserver-backup2ws-0.0.1-22dmay.noarch.rpm
[root@smev7b2 files]# rpm -Uvh *.rpm

No problem I thought, just use yum to install missing file and bob's your uncle.

Code: [Select]
[root@smev7b2 files]# yum install libstdc++.so.5

Rebooted server, just to be on the safe side. When it restarted again, I went into the server manager and into the Backup2WS option and created just a basic test job and executed it. Nothing happened. But messages did show up one interesting line.

Code: [Select]
Sep 20 19:54:43 smev7b2 e-smith-bg: [Tue Sep 20 19:54:43 2005] backup2ws: Insecure dependency in exec while running with -T switch at /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/esmith/util.pm line 660.

I know everything is still in beta but I thought that this would help straighten it out for the final release. Incidentally, there is no mail going to the admin account and no message logs like the ones in 6.0.1.

Hope this helps a bit.

That's great - thanks. As Greg said, it's not going to be in 7.0, but we plan for "well-formed" addons to be very easy to install through yum.

*Please* report *any* issues with 7.0beta to the SourceForge bug tracker, and only there please (as requested in every announcement I posted and in the README in the iso directory).

The first one has already been reported, and we need more details on the second one - to the bug tracker, please.

Hi gordonr,

These latter "errors" are in relation to Backup2WS, not SME. Sorry, I should have explained myself a little better.

Darrel's contrib directory needs to be updated.  The version of 'rar' you have is for RHEL3, and thus required the older libstdc++.  (SME7 switched from EL3 to EL4 partway through the alpha releases).  The EL4 version can be found here - http://dag.wieers.com/packages/rar/ - you might want to remove the one you installed and install the new one instead.
