Why 6.5 and 7.0? Very confused
« on: September 22, 2005, 11:37:42 AM »
Hi guys

searched a lot for this but I don't understand why there are both 6.5RC1 and 7.0Beta4 releases. From titbits in the forum, I gather that the dev guys are working hard to release version 7 so my question is why have 6.5RC1?

Why not make 6.5 a formal release then get everyone worked up over version 7?

Last quick question, are any of these versions supplied with Bind 9 or something similar to allow me to host my own DNS?

Thanks
Cheers
Hilton...

Shad Lords, who developed the 6.5 version, once wrote:

"6.5 is/was a stopgap and a proof of concept for me. It is basically Mitel's 6.0 (not 6.0.1) with latest fedoralegacy updates and samba/email upgrades. There have been updates released since then but it is still
just basically a 6.0 with updated packages. The intenance process that is pushing forward will eventually make 6.0, 6.0.1, and 6.5 identical."

So if you need a production ready version now, just use the SME 6.01 (maybe with our update script).
If you want to set up a test server, you can use SME 7 beta, which is already quite stable.

Plus they are based on two different release trains.
6.5 is based on RH 7.3
7.0 is based on CentOS 4.1 which is based from RHEL4

By the way, 6.5RC1 is working nicely on 2 servers that I am managing.

Note that if you use the update script, then (unless someone steps in soon with some testing and troubleshooting) then you could encounter upgrade problems if you try to upgrade to 7.0.
