Will SME 7.0 B4 run on a AMD K6-II 450 Mhz processor ?
« on: September 25, 2005, 01:23:01 AM »
I have two servers in my home. Server A with Duron 1200 has now got SME 7.0 It is set up as server gateway and it does this job very good. (The 7.0 upgrade is just fantastic, with the new kernel, antiwirus by default, and so on ..)

Server B has a AMD K6-II 450 Mhz / 500 MB RAM. At the moment it is running with SME 6.0.1-01 also without a problem.

And the question: Is it likely to believe that the K6 processor can handle a SME 7.0 installation, or is it known software in this distribution that will require newer hardware (i686) ?

Best reg Arne.

It should be ok.

SME 7 beta have been tested succesfully on other i586 flavours like ViaC3. But it would be nice if you can test the beta on your server B. :hammer:

OK thanks for info. I think I will give it a try with the sme 7.0 in the relatively near future. I actually also have a server no 3 that is a C3 (now running 6.0.1). I believe the C3 and the K6 have approx the same specs.

I tried to run Fedora Core 3 on the C3. Did not work.

You'd better testing CentOS 4.1. It is the distribution used as base for SME7.0.

Thanks for the info about the C3 and SME 7.0

I have now installed and tested out on the K6-II 450 as well. It can be confirmed that it does work.

But on the other hand .. The SME 6.0.1 installation that I have on my C3 has 108 running and sleeping processes while the SME 7.0 Beta 4 has 153. It looks like that some of the new processes consume some processor power. Don't know yet if it's relaly a good ide to install a 7.0 on such rather poor performing hardware.

By the way the 6.0.1 runs rather OK on this hardware. My first ipression is that the 7.0 B4 is a little bit more heavy load.

By the way .. tried to make a upgrade first. This did not work. A fresh new installation did work.

Arne.

OK It was something with the upgrade of the http.conf file that vere running completely wrong. It looked like when the server should boot, It did not find the http.conf file at all. After a new fresh installation this was not a problem.

I will try to post the bug the proper place. (This will be my second bug post, so I start to learn :-) )
