HELP PLEASE: Fetch Emails from ISP while SME is Behind Proxy
« on: October 08, 2005, 03:04:50 AM »
Hi,

Let me first describe what we have and then ask if SME suitable for our needs.

We have an online server hosting our web site and email. The server does not filter spam and has no anti-virus software. Our emails accounts are setup on that server, where each member of our group uses MS Outlook to fetch his/her emails through POP3.

I’m thinking of installing SME on a local computer to help us in protecting our inboxes from spam and viruses and at the same time keep the online server as the main email server. The way I’m thinking to do that is to make SME periodically downloads mails from online server, delete the unwanted messages and keep the good ones. We will then setup our Outlooks to fetch emails from the local SME instead of the online server. I’d also appreciate if someone tells better way to do that.

One may ask why not to make the local SME server acting as email server?! The answer is that our ISP does not give fixed IP and keeps all clients behind transparent-proxy. We also cannot change that ISP, so, we need to deal with what we have.

Thank you very much in advance :)

I use the fetchmail contrib which can be found at:

This will do exactly what you are looking for.

Ask your ISP whether they can set up a multi-drop mailbox for your domain.
