i want to setup an old computer (466mhz, 256mb ram) as a server.
I want to use the following services:
- ssh, vpn
- apache web server with php
- mysql
- fileserver (samba)
- printserver
- ftp server
- (fax server with isdn capi interface)
Am i right with saying that all this features are supported with the sme server?
It should work for a test box. It's going to be slow.
When I choose the version 7beta, am I able to upgrade it without any problems to a final version of the sme server 7?
If it's a test box you should be able to just reinstall the final version. I'm almost sure it will be possible to upgrade but it may not supported. In other words, if you have problems, you may need to start from scratch. Just my opinion.
Remember, it's beta.
When I want to upgrade it, am I allowed to make small changes (upgrade to mysql5 and php5, install openvpn?)
Upgrade will be to what is currently in place. I almost sure that the the final version will not have an upgraded versions of mysql/php from what is currently installed in the beta.
How good is the Software raid function of the server? Is the same like a hardware raid solution? What are the differences?
Humm... One is software and one is hardware..
Software raid is very stable and functional.
No real need for HW raid if you have a newer processor. 486 may be a problem if you want speed...
Am I able to boot the server with only one working harddisk in case of carshig one disk?
Yes.
How long does (planned) it take until sme server 7 final will relase?
I'm not trying to be funny like above....
It will be released when it's done.
If you want it out faster, consider helping.
What are the main problems of the beta version till now?
Look in the bug tracker.
